About Me

I am Ahmed Saeed, a research assistant at Qatar University (earlier I was working at Egypt-Japan University for Science and Technology (E-JUST)). I am currently working on Smart Surveillance with Quadcopter Drones.

I worked earlier Device Free Passive Localization system which is a system that detects/tracks human beings using their effect on WiFi networks without their participation in the localization process using different statistical analysis techniques on received signal strength indication (RSSI).

My graduation project was focused on Numerical Weather Prediction Acceleration using GPUs. We worked on accelerating one of the modules of the WRF model and our implementation was published here. We then applied different optimizations and did extensive analysis on the impact of those optimizations. Our work was accepted as a research poster at the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) at PACT 2010.

I am interested in network scalability research. I had an internship last summer in Nile University. We worked on a bandwidth aggregation solution for portable devices without the need for any infrastructure. We came second in the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) at MobiCom'09. Also the summer before I have worked on the network modules of an open-source library that handles nonblocking IO operations for Ruby servers.

I was the team leader of Software Freedom Day @ Alexandria University 2009  and I was the first Sun Campus Ambassador in Egypt. I helped create open source community at my university as an undergrad and  spread the word about through the presentations I gave in different universities all over Egypt.

My PhD coping mechanism (or how speaking my mind out loud helps me maintain my sanity)

Getting a PhD can easily become a lonely where students get depressed, feel out of place, thrown away alone with a mild to a sever sense of the imposter syndrome. There is no wonder that "graduate students are more than six times as likely to experience depression and anxiety as compared to the general population" . Almost all my friends in graduate school face some sort of mental health struggle. This prompted me to write a post on my personal approach to dealing with my own issues and they all have to do with talking. Personally, I find it very hard to talk to strangers, so I focus all my talking to people I know. I talk to different people because defeating imposter syndrome, self doubt, angry thoughts, and most importantly the depression spiral requires multiple perspectives, especially with the highly logical PhD student.
